JAFO Working at Heights Training develops awareness and practical understanding for employees exposed to fall risks. The final course level must match the work, equipment, applicable regulations and role of each learner. General awareness does not authorise a person to perform every elevated task or specialised fall-arrest function.
Who should attend
- Employees who work from ladders, roofs, scaffolds or elevated platforms.
- Supervisors responsible for planning or monitoring elevated work.
- Maintenance, construction and installation teams.
- Safety personnel who inspect fall-risk controls and records.
Course topics
Depending on the booked scope, learners may cover fall hazards, risk assessment, the hierarchy of controls, safe access, edge protection, work positioning, fall restraint, fall arrest, equipment inspection, anchorage concepts, dropped-object prevention and emergency response.
Fall protection planning
Where the Construction Regulations apply, fall-risk work requires a suitable fall protection plan prepared by a competent person. The plan should address task-specific risk, training, equipment, medical fitness where required, inspection, maintenance and rescue arrangements. Training must operate within that approved system.
Equipment selection and inspection
Harnesses, connectors, lanyards and anchor systems must be appropriate to the task and used according to manufacturer instructions and the workplace plan. Learners are introduced to pre-use checks and defect reporting. Formal inspection or specialised equipment certification may require additional competence.
Rescue readiness
A worker suspended after a fall may face urgent medical risk. Organisations should have a task-appropriate rescue plan, trained people, suitable equipment and a tested communication process. Calling emergency services alone may not be an adequate rescue plan for every site.
Delivery options
JAFO can discuss scheduled, corporate-group and on-site delivery in Johannesburg, Gauteng and other South African locations. Practical delivery depends on the venue, equipment, weather, supervision and safety controls. Review our training delivery options.
Certification and competence
The written proposal will state the course status, learning outcomes, practical requirements, assessment and certificate type. Employers must verify that the programme matches the learner’s actual role and any client, industry or regulatory requirement.
Supporting risk-management guidance is available in the JAFO HIRA guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does awareness training qualify someone to use every fall-arrest system?
No. Competence must match the equipment, task and assigned role. Additional practical or specialised training may be required.
Can training take place on the client’s site?
Potentially, after the venue, equipment, fall risks, permissions and rescue controls are reviewed.
How often should refresher training occur?
Use certificate conditions, legal and client requirements, risk changes, incident findings and demonstrated competence to set the cycle.
